Drug Addiction
What Is Drug Addiction or Drug Abuse?
The National Institute of Drug Addiction (NIDA) defines addiction as a chronic, often relapsing, brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to those around him or her. Brain changes that occur over time from drug use affect an addicted persons self control, judgment and emotions and limit the ability to resist the intense impulses to take drugs. Drug addiction is a complex disease as drugs change the brain in profound ways that then foster compulsive drug abuse. Quitting can be difficult and requires more than will power alone.
Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse Treatment with New Hope Recovery Center
New Hope Recovery Center utilizes the disease model in treating drug addiction. We believe that addictions are treatable conditions much like any other life threatening illness. Additionally, we view recovery from a 12-step perspective with a belief that as the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) states there is hope for continuous and lasting recovery from the hopeless state of body and mind that result from active alcoholism or addiction. Participation in 12-step programming encourages clients to effectively assess their habits and behaviors and teaches that recovery is a life-long process.
Each client at New Hope Recovery Center is treated from a client-centered, holistic perspective that recognizes the unique needs of the individual mind, body and spirit.
